Will John Smoltz Make it as a Starter?

Tough 1.2 innings for the fierce fireballer in the ATL. My guess is that he was just a little too wound up to be on the mound today. Historically, both he & the ATL are not good on day 1, but Braves fans, today's outing from old Smoltzy has to make you wonder: 1. Can Smoltz be effective again as a starter? 2. Can he stay healthy enough to start all year? 3. What is he more concerned with: his ERA, or his handicap on the links?

The guy is very tough, and one would give him the benefit of the doubt for the rest of the year, but you just never know.

sambuca,

I think Smoltz will be okay, but it may take a little while to get back into the swing of things. Like anything, there is a transition.

I know he recently said he hated being in the bull pen because he had to be ready to throw and have and have that "attitude" 5-6 times a week, whereas when he was a starter he only had to get psyched up once every three or four days. He said there was no down time coming out of the pen. However if he spends his down time worrying about "his handicap on the links," then it could be a long season for Smoltzy.

He's probably just depressed about the Michigan State loss. And no, I'm not talking out of my ass. Smoltz is the biggest Spartan fan in the known universe (How GA Hill got Ashley Judd and I got John Smoltz, I will never understand.) On DP a couple of weeks ago, he said he would rather Michigan State won another national championship than win a cy young for himself. Give him time Braves fans, Smoltz still has 15 wins in that arm.
