Most Inappropriate Headline...Ever

I've been meaning to post on Hurricane Katrina, but have been too busy. I will do so this weekend; however, for now, check out this headline. It comes from the NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE, FOR GOD'S SAKE:

Health workers to flood Gulf Coast, N.O. area

Are you trying to tell me that John Pope, the reporter who wrote this, couldn't come up with a word other than "flood"?!?!?

Comments:
Yeah, the word choice is bad there. But I have to be honest and say that I am way more troubled by this headline:

"Sniper fire halts hospital evacuation
Gunmen fire at medical workers and patients at Charity Hospital"
-- CNN.com

I saw another report that the Chinook helicopters that were helping to evacuate people were coming under fire as well.

What the hell is going on?

Not to nitpick, but generally the page editor will come up with the headlines. This way they can fit them on to the page as warranted.

I think it could have been worse. I think in relation to the Katrina story a bad headline is really just a blip in the scheme of things.

Can you explain to me why this headline is the most inappropriate...ever? (By inappropriate I assume you mean callous, insensitive, etc.) It's just that when journalists write headlines they attempt to use words that evoke a feeling of the situation. So yes, New Orleans is flooded, and the subsequent story is about workers and their response to that. From here that headline is fine and appropriate.

Well, this was more to be funny, but if you cannot understand why using the word "flood" (in relation to help coming) in a headline about a city that was just destroyed by flooding, then you must be pretty slow.

I really wanted to like this blog, I did, I tried, but jesus, there seems to be a prevalent trend from one adminstrator that if a reader challenges anything that's been posted they're immediately branded as "slow," stupid or incompetent. In the interest of encouraging comments and discussion and allow readers to ENGAGE your posts, I would humbly suggest toning down the condescending attitude.

Well...

A) Considering it seems like it is just our friends that read this, I assumed it was one of them that left this comment. A lot of people who contribute to this blog (including yours truly) are slow.

B) Assuming makes an ass out of you and me.

I apologize if I offended you; again, just trying to joke around with what I figured was one of our friends.
