Meeeechigan

Let's go Bowlin'

Is anybody else giddy over this matchup? When i first heard about the matchup i was pissed because i just think that we are so over matched...but the more I think about it the more excited I am, this is a great opportunity to get back on the map. A win over Iowa wouldn't have done as much in terms of national respect that an upset of Meeeechigan will garner. What do we have to lose right now? All the streaks are gone, it's time to start rebuilding and to finish the season destroying the Puffs and upsetting the Wolverines would be just what the doctor ordered. Plus, I am so sick of hearing about the '97 game from Michigan people that it makes me want to puke, this is a chance to end that discussion...or at least quiet it and i'm all for that.
The thing that gives me hope is how much better we have been the games after bye weeks under Callahan. Wonder what he can do with 3 weeks to prepare? And let's be honest, the Nebraska kids are much more excited to play in this game than the underachievers from Meeeeechigan are. We've got a chance...

PS: I'm pissed i can't go...i've been to SA twice for Husker games (Big 12 title game and the Alamo Bowl butt kicking of Mich. St.)...if any of you are thinking about going, GO! The river walk is an absolute kick-ass party place. My fondest memory was when i was in the same dueling piano bar as Corso, Herby, and Fowler and tried to pay the piano dude $20 to sing the F@#$ Lee Corso song...I was pissed though because i don't think Lee even heard the piano guy say..."I'm sorry i don't know the F@#$ Lee Corso song"...the Nebraska fans loved it.

Comments:
Michigan, with a healthy Michael Hart beats the crap out us. If he wasn't injured all year, they beat Minnesota and Wisconsin and go 9-2.

Your damn right the River Walk can be a good time. I was there when NU handed it to Northwestern in 2000 I think...good times. After the game Gump and I were hanging out with the third or fourth string NU fullback and a red shirt freshman running back (Both from North Platte USA) Turns out we...and we I say we I mean the above mentioned NU players...almost came to fisticuffs with Northwestern's starting QB, and Field Goal Kicker. Funny thing about is the Kicker was the one who initiated the altercation.

The Big Boi, having nothing to do on Dec. 28th, will be going to San Antonio. I think MIB, Hales, and Benson are going too. If anyone else feels like coming, I'm making the arrangements tomorrow after my mortgages final. We're going to drive, as plane tickets cost like $500 bucks. Anyone interested in tagging along let me know.

I agree with you, EZT. This is icing on the cake for the season. Two nice wins at the end launches us to a very respectable bowl, against a huge national name (for whatever reason--Michigan is the most overrated school in the country. This also brings to mind my old saying: Farmhouse is the Michigan of UNL fraternities, but I digress....).

If we pull an upset on these guys, which we can, that would just be unbelievable. I honestly believe a win in this bowl puts us almost a full year ahead of what looks to be a return to national power in '08-'09 to being ranked next year, and being top 10-15 in '07.

And as far as the 1997 game goes: Nebraska beat the shit out of Peyton Manning, Michigan barely beat Ryan Leaf. That is the end of the argument.

Goods...
I like the hire for KSU personally but let's be honest, he was about the 4th option for KSU. He's young and unproven and it's tougher than hell to recruit to that hell hole that is Manhattan, it's a tough job for anyone. I'll be surprised if anyone ever succeeds there as much as Snyder did.

Does seeing the name "Ryan Leaf" make anyone else just about keel over in laughter...

I agree on the KSU hire. Prince did a decent job as Virginia's offensive coordinator. He changed his offensive schemes to match the talent he had on the field. I think its a pretty good hire for K-State. It remains to be seen if they will be able to recruit, but at least the guy brought the program into the new millenium. Snyder wouldn't even allow his coaches to use laptops. The first thing Prince did was buy all of his coaches Blackberries and laptops. I hope he can keep K-State competitive because the North needs to have decent teams in order for NU to be competitive nationally.

You guys are fucking delusional if you think A) This has anything to do with 97. or B) This is a good matchup for us.

First of all, most of these guys were in like sixth grade when we split the titles, and although we would have destroyed them with our 399.8 rushing yards per game average that season, there is no reason that this matters for our purposes today. Seriously, I challenge anyone to give me one compelling rebuttal to the contrary.

Secondly, Michigan had four losses by a combined 17 points. They played close games with three of top six teams in the BCS. The beat Iowa and Northwestern on the road. Although the Big 10 is always overrated in both FB and BB they still have unquestionably played better games against better teams than we have. There's no denying it.

There's a reason this is the second highest point spread of any of the bowls.

Michigan 38 Nebraska 14

Pete, you are right, as always.

Jesus Pete...
First of all where did I or Shearer once say that '97 mattered to these kids? I said it would be nice to shut there fans up about it...never once did i even mention it as a reason to win this game. Speaking of that where did I once mention in the post that we would win this game???? Keep searching because you won't find it, frankily I think we struggle to keep it close. All i pointed out was one reason to have hope and that's been Callahan's ability to make good gameplans when he's had extra weeks to prepare.

How is this not a great opportunity for Nebraska??? What does this program get from beating an Iowa team that nobody outside of the midwest gives a crap about? It's damn sure a better match up for us than playing Oregon in the Holiday Bowl which was the other option, jesus they'd kill us. At least we get a chance to play an unmotivated team that has proven to be one of the already most underachieving teams in college football this year.

Finally, this game because of the storied history's of both schools, will draw a lot of attention...and we need that right now.

Let me ask you this Pete since you think this is such a horrible match up...would we be better off going to a scrub bowl game and beating a no name school...let's use beating TCU in the Houston bowl as our example.
Hell no, we gain nothing from that...a respectable loss to Michigan goes further in the national eyes than does a win over TCU in a bowl game nobody will watch....
If you can't get excited about this games possibilities for the program than i am not sure you are a fan of the program...period.

^^^^TJ, I basically posted exactly what you wrote right there, but it timed out on me and did not post.

I agree 1000% with what you said. And yes, I said 1000%. I also always gave 110% in football practice.

I would almost rather go to the Houston Bowl and beat the crap out of someone, (although I think that the 10-1 TCU Horned Frogs could beat us just as easily as vice versa, but I digress) for several reasons:
1. It's still in Texas for recruiting purposes, and there are far more top flight high schools in Houston than San Antone.

2. We didn't go to a bowl game last year. And, as numerous sportscasters have pointed out this week, no bowl game really matters prestige-wise that isn't involved in the BCS. Let's not kid ourselves, no one really knows or cares about the differences between the Houston Bowl and The Alamo Bowl. I don't anyway. If it's not BCS, it's pretty close to the same thing. It's a bowl game, better than no bowl at all, but I'm not necessarily sure it's a huge step up from another bowl game played before Jan 2.

3. The most important reason for this program with it's so-called development to go to a bowl game is extra practice time for the returning players next year. Mission accomplished.

4. Let's say that Michigan covers the spread, is the feeling of playing Michigan going to make you forget about the drubbing? Of course not. I'd personally feel a lot better about beating a lesser team like Colorado State or BYU or something than just by standing on the field with Michigan.

If we win, or look good and lose, I'll be the first to admit I have no point. Until then, we'll see what happens.

Sorry about the it's instead of its under number three. I look like a third grader.

Disagree, Pete. No one outside Nebraska watches a Nebraska-CSU/TCU matchup. As some SI writer said on Unsportsmanlike Conduct the other day, this is a great "helmet game." It brings way more attention, and way more people will watch this vs. any other potential matchup presented before this.

Basically, the only part I agree with is the extra practices, which will help a lot.

What the hell is the spread, anyways?

Michigan is favored 10-14 points...it's jumped around a ton...last i saw it was 12.5

Pete I'm glad we agree on the importance of playing in Texas for recruiting purposes...and you are dead on that Houston has more athletes...but we totally differ from there on.
This game is actually going to draw decent TV ratings. I believe it was Ivan Maisel that said this is the second most watchable bowl game outside of the BCS (i think he had Bama/Tech in the cotton #1). This game is going to garner some national media attention and that is greatly needed right now...again for recruiting purposes.

Pete why is that I get the impression you are actually rooting against Nebraska this year?

TJ,

This is a better TV game than Miami-LSU? Oklahoma-Oregon? Iowa-Florida? Akron-Memphis? No, no, no, yes.

As far as rooting against Nebraska, how does questioning things mean I'm rooting against the team? Especially in this case, when I'm really just questioning the fact that our bowl game isn't quite as great as it appears, nothing really to do with the team. And believe it or not, I'm not the only one who thinks we will lose badly. Apparently Vegas is on my side.

I've been to more Nebraska games than anyone on this site this year and don't really feel like my loyalty should be questioned. I'm also not going to blindly say things that I don't feel are true about the state of our program. We are not near the program we need to be right now, and I'm not sure that we will be with Callahan and Pedersen. I don't feel any obligation to say otherwise out of some sort of loyalty issue.

Will I be rooting for the team on Dec 28? Absolutely. Will I be happy if we win? Sure. But I'm also not going to be pissed off nor surprised if we get our dicks kicked in by Michigan on national TV and set the program back a few notches.

Pete,
Sorry if i questioned your loyalty...you are actually one of the few people i know that goes to as many games in a year as i do, but from your comments over the last 2 months you leave the impression that you would rather see this group lose so that you can back your opinion that BC and Pederson need to go and i find that kind of pathetic...maybe that's not what you mean and it's just the impression you leave, but it makes me sick. Mostly because i know there are thousands of others in the "husker nation" also rooting against this staff.

Yeah there are a faction of the fans that will never be happy.

I will absolutely be thrilled if we win. It will be huge for recruiting, but we've been really stepping that up in the last couple of weeks.

It will be especially big for recruiting because we are butting heads with Michigan right now for a couple of blue chippers.
