The Rodney Dangerfields of Baseball

It is just absurd how overlooked the Astro’s are year in and year out. Every night they are just a blip on Sportscenter. They have the best record in baseball yet on ESPN’s power rankings they are currently ranked 8th in between the Blue Jays and the Angels two teams whose combined record is just .500. Plus the Yankees despite being only a half game ahead of the D-Rays and being the 4th best team in their division are ranked as the 5th best team in all of baseball. It’s like the Astro’s and their players don’t exist. There are a bunch of players on this team that are having an amazing start to the season but no one has said anything about it. ESPN just had an article talking about how good Josh Becket has been this year for the Red Sox. Let’s compare his stats to the Astro’s eventual 5th starter.

Wandy Rodriguez

Wins- 3
ERA- 2.52
K’s- 15

Josh Beckett

Wins- 3
ERA- 2.54
K’s- 15

Despite identical stats, you won’t be seeing any articles on Wandy any time soon. For another example, I present Morgan Ensberg. He is destroying the ball and to prove my point lets line him up against the “best” hitter in baseball Albert Pujols.

Pujols has been on a tear hitting 6 homeruns in his last 6 games (3 coming in one game).

AVG.- .358

OBP.- .507

Ensberg has hit 7 homeruns in his last 6 games.

AVG.- .411

OBP.- .522

If Ensberg played for New York, Chicago, or the Cardinals everyone would be talking about how good he is.

This team made it to the World Series last year, currently has the best record in baseball and still can not get any respect.

Comments:
That is a great post, even if about the Astros. And I can use Derrek Lee as an example here, too. The Cubs are the fifth most valuable team in all of baseball, one of the most (tragically) storied franchises in all of sports, and one of the most rabid (and retarded) fan bases in the game. Yet Thursday night when it was announced Derrek Lee would be out until July, it was on SportsCenter...just before the first commercial break. To add injury to insult: the lead story/highlight was the fucking Tampa Bay vs. Boston game.

You're telling me that the Red Sox losing to Tampa Bay in the first month of the season is a bigger story than one of the top three-to-five players in all of baseball breaking his wrist and effectively ending what was looking like a promising season from the most miserable and tourtured franchise in sports? Really??

ESPN is this sad little parody of itself anymore. It is getting to the point of not even wasting your breath on it, but it is still maddening. Unless you are one of the following:

-Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols
-Yankees, Red Sox
-Duke, North Carolina, UCONN, ACC
-USC
-Tiger Woods
-Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwane Wade (who I love, but still)
-Ray Lewis (still????), T.O., Michael Vick, New England Patriots
-ACC Women's Basketball

...you're not worth their time.

Here is another example: ESPN slammed the women's basketball tourney down everyone's throats because--shock--it was all on ESPN. The women's Final Four was constantly referred to as the "ACC Invitational." Yet (quite literally), the fact that:

--LSU had both their programs in their respective Final Fours
--The men's Final Four (you know, the one people care about?) consisted of two SEC teams

No one on that stupid channel EVER talked about possible all-SEC championship game. Which, by the way, is far more unlikely in the men's game because there are more than 5 programs that actually matter in the game. No, it turns out that ESPN does not have a financially-vested interest in pumping the SEC for men's basketball, except for their Tuesday night games. No, they're too busy broadcasting every Duke game except for two or three and talking about how the ACC is the greatest conference in the history of sport.

Anyways, there's my (very partial) rant. Great post, Kyle.

Morgan Ensberg is a stud.

I agree, ESPN is in a downward spiral lately.

I think the 'stros would be garnering more respect if they had actually won a world series game last year

You can knock Mayfield and the Astros all you want. I hate the goddamn Astros, although they were my World Series pick this year.

The thing is, his posts are normally backed up by stats and numbers. Credit where credit is due this is a hell of a convincing post.

And at least my fantasy team is enjoying this Morgan Ensberg run.

Who are you talking to, Pete?

I was actually just stating that he made a good post on this one.

Not calling you out, GA. Solid Cubs win tonight. They would have lost last night.

Dear Mayfield,

What is respect going to do for the Astros? Get more ESPN time? In my humble opinion, I always want the chip on my team's shoulder. I want my team to be a sleeper.

It's more annoying than anything. I didn't purchase the baseball package this year nor have I purchased MLB.TV either so I am left with only being able to watch the Atro's games when

A. The play on Wednesdays and I'm at DJ's Dugout.

B. They are playing the Cubs or Braves.

Which would be fine if ESPN might show more than a half second of highlights for them.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about information and love learning more on this. If possible, as you gain expertise, It is extremely helpful for me.
