Sports Talk Soup
I'm addicted to sports radio, which is unfortunate, because generally it makes me lose countless braincells/drive my car off the road. It's the most intellectually devoid schtick of any mass medium I can think of, including The Flavor of Love.
However, I feel like I'm qualified to voice my two cents on it.
The Dan Patrick Show is only good when Olbermann is on with him. I contend that he cannot carry the show without a sidekick. Apparently the ESPN brass think this as well, hence Olbermann.
It should be pointed out that the Tony Kornheiser show was the best sports radio show broadcast in Omaha ever. Here are my sports radio show rankings:
1. Dan Patrick (w/ Olbermann)
2. Rome -Pretty funny, good gimmicks abound, talks about awesome sports like boxing, gets better guests then Patrick, SOME of his rants are actually thought-provoking. (Although Shearer makes a point about his callers, very annoying)
3. The Big Show with Matt Perrault on 590: Really made strides recently after a mediocre beginning. Also, his Husker postgame show is far superior to the Pinnacle broadcast.
4. Dan Patrick sans Olbermann
5. Mike and Mike (doesn't make me want to shoot myself on the way to work, but that's about it for compliments here)
1,062. The Herd-Basically the Sean Hannity of Sports Talk, makes inane arguments and tries to support them with lowbrow emotional appeals. It is cool when any national show comes to Omaha though, I have to agree. Too bad it's this one.
1,063. Unsportsmanlike Conduct-If you like the idea of Mike Greenberg and Alfonso Ribiero (Carlton Banks from the Fresh Prince) getting into fake arguments, this is your show. Sometimes there are some cheap laughs off dumb Husker fans, but the laughs really turn to tears once I realize that we're essentially on the same side.

I myself really like Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Maybe I'm in the minority but I love when they do the husker forum post of the day. Those always kill me.
Pete, you make me laugh. Great Post. Definitely agree on Tony K. His show isn't the same on XM. If Unsportsman bothers you, you're lucky not to hear "average joe sports show" in lincoln, mainly a bunch of homers. The herd makes me laugh and I generally enjoy him because he makes such an arse of himself. Rome has been my favorite since the dog days of summer out of HS when sports talk was first getting huge around these parts. The big show with DP & KO is really good, and I've warmed up to Mike & Mike, although Golic is very annoying at times. I too am addicted, unfortunately.
I'm torn on the herd. While Pete's analysis isn't wrong, I enjoy the fact that the show is intentional about talking college football for a large portion of the show in, say, April. I'd take that over Steroid/Pete Rose/normal sports talk topics any day.
I'm a little surprised with the hatred for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. If you had to endure the Average Joe show in Lincoln, you'd appreciate what you have.
Remember when Gary Sharp used to do the Pinnacle show, Sports Nightly, now that was fantastic. I haven't listened to that show for almost a year.
And the chemistry between Patrick, Dibble and the Show Killer is sorely missing from that show anymore. That show used to be far and away #1, now I can hardly stand Patrick beating the topic of the day to death.

KO has saved the Patrick show...i can barely stand to listen to him without KO.
Mike and mike is avg. but i actually think its an above avg. morning show.
Rome is still Rome, annoying at times but has staying power and he easily does the best interviews of anybody in the biz
Pete, we completely disagree on the Herd...it is slowly becoming my favorite of all espn radio shows and I've actually been thrilled that they have started using Colin on a few Sportscenter deals every now and than. His blatant love for football, especially college and the fact that it takes over every one of his shows at least gives you something different to listen to through the day. If you spend a full day in the car, it gets real old because every show says the exact same damn thing. I think this is actually the reason i can't stomach DP anymore....by the time he comes on every subject has been hashed and rehashed 35 times.
As for Unsportsmanlike Conduct...i'm with you Pete it sucks and unlike other Lincolnites i actually prefer AJJS over that omaha crap. I will admit most of the reason i hate UC is their complete creighton bias. I get so sick of hearing about the Jays on that show that i want to vomit. And as for the AJJS...it's very, very amateur, but i actually really enjoy Smith and L. Kent. LKW is a movie genious and i love hearing him bring something other than sports knowledge to the show....and suprisingly these guys do a great job with local hs sports coverage and husker baseball coverage which are both important to me.

I really like the fresh perceptive you did on the issue. Really was not expecting that when I started off studying. Your concepts were easy to understand that I wondered why I never looked at it before. Glad to know that there's an individual out there that definitely understands what he's discussing. Great job
