Former Player: "Don't be surprised to see the Huskers in a BCS bowl game"

Last night I got the chance to hang out with one of Heavy Soul's favorite former Husker walk-ons/bar proprietors Matt Vrzal after he filled in for Matt Hoskinson on his and Joel Mackovicka's Husker radio show on 1620 The Zone. As I was driving out to the Icehouse (where their show does their live broadcast), Vrz had this to say (and I apologize if this is even the slightest bit off, but like I said, I was driving):

"I'm going to go on record here and say this: don't be surprised to see the Huskers in a BCS bowl game. I'm not saying they're playing for the National Championship. But I would not be surprised to see them make a BCS game."

Naturally, I was very surprised by this. For one, Vrz has never been a shiny optimist when it comes to Husker predictions. In fact, when everyone was trying like hell to buy into the Callahan era and were predicting big things last season, he was one who said we'd be lucky to win 7. So I asked him about his bold prediction when I got there, and he had this to say:

"Fratty, I'm telling you, I would not be surprised. There is so much talent on that team it is scary. I've been to a bunch of practices, and there is some SERIOUS talent on that team. And the coaches are legit."

Now, that was not a direct quote whatsoever, but that was the gist of it. He also echoed much of what has already been said, but that because practices were so much like NFL practices, there was just tons of talent rotting on the bench as no one that wasn't at least 2nd string really got any reps under Callahan-run practices.

So there you are, Husker fan. Throw trepidation and cautious optimism to the wind! It's going to be a great year!

let me be the first to say that as awesome as this would be, its completely absurd.

I think we win at best nine games and at worst six. probably eight.

that said, this coaching staff is thrilling me and every husker fan. I love everything that has happened since osborne and pelini became the dre and snoop of nebraska athletics. I guess that makes doc sadler the d.o.c. and coach a nate dogg.

I love hearing this stuff and yet I am cautious. I think we are going to win 8 or 9 games, but BCS game? That is coming a little strong.

Congrats to Vrz for making his radio debut.

Seriously, lol

Somebody needs to call M.U.D. and have them check for a gas leak.

Put down the crackpipe asshats nubs will be lucky to win 7 games

Nice to see AJ leaving a comment, i don't know how many of you on this blog read his....but you should. I've always wondered when our blogs would cross paths (maybe they already have and i just haven't noticed). Anyway, welcome AJ.

For those of you who haven't read his....this man hates the huskers (he's a Mizzou fan stuck in Omaha) with about the same passion that we all hate Creighton, or maybe worse. It's usually well wrote and he does a great job of stirring the Husker Nation's collective blood.

I dont understand where all the negativity is coming from. Obviously our defense was horrible last year, but the offense was in the top 10. Lucky is the only returning 1,000 yard rusher in the big 12, Joe Ganz puts up playstation like numbers.

You know the D will be better this year, they couldn't get any worse, but with Bo, I think they'll be a top 50 D which is enough to make a run if your offense is good.

9 wins MINIMUM in 2008. BCS Game, Id take that action too.

"usually well wrote..." Tell me that was intentional ezt.

As a Husker fan, I would definitely recommend checking out AJ's blog as it's a highly entertaining read. He truly does hate us, but read for awhile and you'll come to appreciate it. He's a pretty talented writer so once you get past his vile and see some of the comments he gets out of some of our fanbase, I dare you not to bust the occasional gut.

Wow... Excellent dear, great post!! there is so information on this blog, keep posting like this so that i can come

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don't know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
